Why grow your own tomatoes?

An analysis by the US Department of Agriculture highlights that 100 grams of fresh tomato today has 30% less vitamin C, 30% less B-1, 19% less B-3, and 62% less calcium than it did in the 1960′s. The industrial tomatoes of today, however, do provide 14 times more sodium.

During the growing season, the Florida tomato farmer has over 100 chemicals at his disposal including 19 herbicides, 31 fungicides, and 60 pesticides. A grower typically applies more than $2,000 worth of chemicals and pesticides on every acre of tomatoes.
